Textiles
I block print linen here in my workshop entirely by hand, using linseed oil based inks, which I mix to create beautiful earth-toned colours. I print directly from my carved lino blocks onto medium weight 100% linen cloth. I chose this fabric for its softness, its natural oatmeal colour and the beautiful antique-like patina it gives to the printed image.
The designs start with drawings and observations, inspired by the nature and landscape of Snowdonia. Things collected on walks, and plants and flowers - often hedgerow weeds and wildflowers - that can be found on the field and woodland edges around my Conwy Valley home.
The printing process is slow and careful, but it creates a truly artisan cloth, with all of the natural variations that give character to the printed pattern. It also means that I can collaborate, to print and make-up items in bespoke colours and sizes.
After the ink has been applied, it takes some weeks to cure before it can be taken to the cutting table and stitched into cushions and other items. When made, these are displayed in my studio shop and made available to buy here on my website.
